Concrete coffee table : how to choose the right one

The concrete coffee table is often the first concrete piece you bring home. It structures the living room, creates a visual anchor point, and completely changes how a space reads.

But choosing a concrete coffee table isn’t like choosing a wooden or glass one. There are specific questions to ask first. Size, shape, daily use, material pairings. Here’s a full run-through.

1. Concrete coffee table : what size for what space?

This is the first thing to determine. A coffee table that’s too small disappears in a large living room. One that’s too big crushes the space and blocks circulation.

Basic rule : the concrete coffee table should be between half and two-thirds the length of the sofa. For a 250 cm sofa, a table between 120 and 160 cm works well.

Height matters too. The concrete coffee table should sit at seat level, or slightly below. Between 30 and 45 cm depending on the model. Too low and it becomes uncomfortable to use. Too high and it loses its visual balance.

2. Round or rectangular : what it actually changes

The shape of a concrete coffee table isn’t just a matter of taste. It depends on the space and how you use it.

A round table softens the angles of a living room. It makes circulation easier and creates less visual tension. In a small space, it takes up less psychological room even if the actual surface area is similar.

A rectangular table structures the space more. It aligns with the lines of the sofa and the room. In a living room with a strong architectural logic, it often works better.

Bertrand Jayr’s Strut coffee table plays with an intermediate format : oval, with a massive concrete base and a glass top. It softens without giving up character.

3. The weight of concrete : a constraint or an asset?

A concrete coffee table weighs between 30 and 80 kg depending on the model and dimensions. That’s more than a wooden or glass table.

Two things follow from that. First : you don’t move it alone easily. You need to decide where it goes before buying and stick to it. Second : that mass is exactly what gives it its presence. It stays put. It anchors the space. It doesn’t shift at the first kick.

For apartments with delicate parquet or tiling, check the feet or base of the table before buying. Some models have protective pads. If not, suitable felt pads will do the job.

4. Finishes and colours : what’s available

Design concrete isn’t necessarily grey. Finishes vary depending on the brand and collection.

Natural grey is the most common finish. It’s the colour of raw concrete, with its natural tone variations. Each piece is slightly different.

Some models come in tinted concrete : black, white, terracotta depending on the collection. Black concrete has a stronger, more graphic presence. White concrete is more discreet, closer to a minimalist material.

Surface finish also changes the result. Raw concrete, sanded concrete, matte varnished concrete. Each has a different character under light.

5. Concrete coffee table : what to pair it with in the living room?

Concrete works very well with other materials. That’s actually what makes choosing a concrete coffee table interesting : it creates contrasts rather than disappearing into the background.

With wood : it’s the most common pairing and it almost always works. The warmth of wood balances the mineral quality of concrete. Oak parquet, a walnut sideboard, wooden shelving — all of it works well with concrete.

With leather and textiles : a leather sofa, a wool rug, linen cushions. The concrete coffee table finds its place in this environment without overwhelming the comfort.

With metal : in a more industrial interior, concrete and metal sit together naturally. Raw steel, brass, anodised aluminium.

To avoid : all-minimalist all-white combinations where the concrete gets lost. It needs something warm or contrasted to express its character.

For more on material pairings in contemporary design, Dezeen regularly documents projects using concrete in interiors.

Day-to-day use

A concrete coffee table with a raw concrete top requires a little attention day to day. Not much : avoid placing liquids directly on it without a coaster, and wipe it regularly with a damp cloth.

For glass tops like on the Strut, maintenance is even simpler. A cloth, that’s all.

If the concrete top starts absorbing water (water no longer beads on the surface), a re-treatment with the Lyon Béton care kit restores the protection in a few minutes. We cover this in detail in our complete concrete furniture care guide.

FAQ — Concrete coffee table

What height should a concrete coffee table be?

Between 30 and 45 cm depending on the model. The rule is to stay at or slightly below the seat height of the sofa, usually around 40 cm.

Is a concrete coffee table fragile?

No. The fibre-reinforced concrete used in design furniture is very resistant to everyday impacts. A very strong impact can cause a chip, but under normal use conditions a concrete coffee table lasts for decades.

Can you put hot things on a concrete coffee table?

Not directly on the concrete. Heat doesn’t damage the material, but it can mark the surface if the treatment is recent. A coaster is the best habit.

Round or rectangular concrete coffee table?

It depends on the space. Round softens angles and makes circulation easier. Rectangular structures the space more and aligns with the sofa’s lines. In a large open living room, both work.

What budget for a quality concrete coffee table?

A handcrafted design concrete coffee table starts around €600–800. It’s a long-term investment : these pieces don’t go out of style and last a very long time.
